Utilizing IoT for Effective Water Conservation

Water scarcity is an escalating problem that is projected to impact nearly 20% of the world's population by 2025, as indicated by numerous UN studies. This pressing issue affects not only certain populations but also the global economy and various ecosystems, making water resource preservation and management imperative.   Leveraging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud-based systems, and big data can facilitate a strategic implementation for water conservation. These digital tools are capable of gathering, processing, and analyzing significant volumes of water data in real time, which are then used to offer assistive services for water management. Key elements for this setup primarily involve water metering devices, sensors, networks, and mobile systems.   Case Description Smart water management systems are a result of integrating equipment like data collectors and innovative water meters. Such systems allow an advanced level of water management across campuses, businesses, and households by enabling an IoT-based network of numerous water metering devices.   A distinct feature of water management is displayed through smart water meters- a sophisticated advancement from traditional water meters. These utilize communication methods such as NB-IoT and LoRa to establish connectivity and enhance networking. Primarily, these devices perform three functions: Remote monitoring and controlling of water usage through data transfer to the cloud, water quality and environment analysis around the meter such as temperature and pressure via inbuilt sensor using SIMCom NB-IoT modules, and finally, bridging with smart cities for providing user-specific services.   Conservation of water is not solely reliant on smart water meters but also extends to active water leakage management. Facilities equipped with water leakage and humidity sensors can drastically reduce wastage, particularly within water-demanding sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, and power generation.   SIMCom Module Advantages Water consumption has been on a steady rise, increasing approximately 1% annually since the 1980s, as per the UN statistics. Expectedly, the demand for water resources will increase over time. As an established entity in the IoT module industry for over two decades, SIMCom leverages its expertise in IoT technologies like 5G, LTE Cat.1, NB-IoT, GNSS, Smart, and Car-grade communication modules, bringing a scientific and intelligent approach to water conservation strategies.
